The municipality of Becej is situated in the eastern part of Backa, on the right bank of the river Tisa in Serbia and Montenegro . The municipality includes other settlements like: Backo Petrovo Selo, Backo Gradiste, Milesevo and Radicevic.

The Municipality of Becej occupies an area of 487 sq. km. The number of inhabitants of the town of Becej is 26.000, while 41.000 citizens populate other five places of the commune.

Becej is at the crossroads of the Sombor-Becej and Novi Sad - Senta rail-route and has a road connection with Novi Sad , Subotica , Senta and through a dam on the river Tisa , with Kikinda and Zrenjanin. Through a canal system DTD and the river Tisa , Becej has connection with European waterways.

The archeological findings trace the history of this settlement back to 5000 B.C. At the end of the 16th century this area was settled by the A vars and Slavs, and in the 9th century, by the Hungarians. The settlement was first mentioned in written documents in 1091. The first school was opened in 1703. The municipality today has a significant economic activity with its 50 larger and 150 smaller private companies. The agricultural, food, metal and textile industries are the most dominant. The municipality has one of the largest irrigation systems in Serbia . The nearby river Tisa offers a variety of sports, leisure and recreation possibilities. The use of thermal -mineral water has a long tradition. The cultural activities have a multicultural character.
